Insurance Reimbursement Options - Superbills
Paying out-of-pocket for therapy, as opposed to filing insurance, provides you with more flexibility and additional privacy without the need to meet insurance carrier* requirements. However, this does mean that you are responsible for the full session fee at the time of session.
When seeking reimbursement, clients can contact their insurance carrier and submit what is called a superbill - which is an itemized receipt for services. Some plans have an out-of-network deductible, and reimbursement rates for out-of-network services vary by both insurance carrier and specific plans offered by the carrier.
Contact your insurance carrier to learn more about reimbursement options for out-of-network services, such as what percentage of the cost of sessions would be eligible for reimbursement paid back to you.
Some insurance carriers will reimburse members based on what the carrier considers to be a ‘flat market rate’ as opposed to a percentage of the cost that the patient pays themselves for services. The ‘flat market rate’ can also differ among insurance carriers.
Most insurance carriers have online ‘member portals’ which include online processes for submitting requests for reimbursement for out-of-network services.
*Examples of insurance carriers include but are not limited to: BCBS, Aetna, Aetna SHP, Cigna, etc.
